Psalm 59 – The Assured Judgement of the Wicked

Published January 25, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

At Psalm 59 we find another reference to other places in Scripture. At 1 Samuel 19:11 we hear of spies sent to kill David in his house. We read further, of David’s wife Michal, Saul’s daughter, helping David to escape. And David sings,

1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
Defend me from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,
And save me from bloodthirsty men.
3 For look, they lie in wait for my life;
The mighty gather against me,
Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord.
4 They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine.

And Michal helps David. And David escapes. And God is given all the glory.

16 But I will sing of Your power;
Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;
For You have been my defense
And refuge in the day of my trouble.
17 To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises;
For God is my defense,
My God of mercy.

Who has God given to you to help escape the forces of evil set against you? On this side of glory, the answer is, many! For the eternity coming, the answer is Jesus. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. Thank You for giving us to one another to help us through the trials of these days. Thank You for giving us Your Son to lead us into glory, through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus name, Amen.
