Psalm 58 – The Just Judgement of the Wicked

Published January 18, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Psalm 58 is a Song of Judgement upon the wicked. We live in a world that is full of what may appear as unbridled wickedness. It was as much a truth for David, as it is a truth for us today.

3 The wicked are estranged from the womb;
They go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.
4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent;
They are like the deaf cobra that stops its ear,
5 Which will not heed the voice of charmers,
Charming ever so skillfully.

But the LORD, your God promises judgement of the wicked.

9 Before your pots can feel the burning thorns,
He shall take them away as with a whirlwind,
As in His living and burning wrath.
10 The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance;
He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,
11 So that men will say,
“Surely there is a reward for the righteous;
Surely He is God who judges in the earth.”

Know this Beloved. In as much as God judges the wicked, there is hope for the righteous. The wicked shall find their fast end. Christ’s Church shall live on. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

You are just. The wicked shall receive their just reward. You are merciful. Through the blood of Your Son, Your people are drawn out of their wickedness, unto life eternal. May Your glory reign in this world, dividing the chaff from the wheat. May the gospel do its work. In Christ, Amen.
