Psalm 61 – Assurance of God’s Eternal Protection

Published February 8, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Dear Reader, God has you. David contemplates such things in Psalm 61. It is as if he has awoken from his slumber and begins his day with prayer to the God of his salvation.

1 Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
David has known the God of his salvation. He need only contemplate the past.
3 For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah

In what follows, we the readers learn more about David, but we see Jesus Christ!

5 For You, O God, have heard my vows;
You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.
6 You will prolong the king’s life,
His years as many generations.
7 He shall abide before God forever.
Oh, prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him!

How can David not, how can we not be left in awe, for what faith in God, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, has done. What an eternity coming, we have to look forward to and trust in!! Now, let us live.

8 So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows.

And let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,
Blessed be Your holy name. Help us to wonder in your glory. Help us to see our preservation in Your Son. Help us to rely upon the Holy Spirit to secure our confidence in Your love for us. May we pray and live each day with Your sovereignty in our hearts. In Jesus name, Amen.
