Psalm 60 – Urgent Prayer for the Restored Favor of God

Published February 1, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

We come to another Psalm that mentions times and places from places in Scripture. Psalm 60’s title refers to the many triumphs of King David referenced from 2 Samuel 8 and 1 Chronicles 18.
Psalm 60 is a cry for help.

1 O God, You have cast us off;
You have broken us down;
You have been displeased;
Oh, restore us again!
2 You have made the earth tremble;
You have broken it;
Heal its breaches, for it is shaking.
3 You have shown Your people hard things;
You have made us drink the wine of confusion.

Psalm 60 declares, however, the sovereignty of God over all matters.

6 God has spoken in His holiness:
“I will rejoice;I will divide Shechem
And measure out the Valley of Succoth.
7 Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet for My head;
Judah is My lawgiver.
8 Moab is My washpot;
Over Edom I will cast My shoe;
Philistia, shout in triumph because of Me.”

Finally, Psalm 60 declares David’s rightful dependence upon his God.

11 Give us help from trouble,
For the help of man is useless.
12 Through God we will do valiantly,
For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.

Now that you have understood Psalm 60, go and read 1 Chronicles 18 and witness the glory of your God. The resounding theme is this: “So the LORD preserved David wherever he went.” This is your God, dear reader. Let us pray.

Dear LORD and heavenly Father,
Blessed be Your holy name. Let us cry out to You. Let us declare Your sovereignty over all things. Let us be brought gloriously into Your midst, in the name of Your Son, through the power of the Holy Spirit. May Christ be with us, wherever we go. In His name, Amen.
