Psalm 70 – Prayer for Relief from Adversaries

Published April 12, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Dear Reader,

When times are overwhelming, Psalm 70 is a prayer, you can pray. It is a short prayer. Perhaps David’s adversaries were at the door, as it were, and he only had a minute to compose. He begins by calling upon the LORD, his God, in urgency.

1 Make haste, O God, to deliver me!
Make haste to help me, O Lord!

If we know the David of Scripture, we know that he had many enemies. He continues to cry out to his God, in light of all those who pursue his life.

Let them be ashamed and confounded
Who seek my life;
Let them be turned back and confused
Who desire my hurt.
Let them be turned back because of their shame,
Who say, “Aha, aha!”

And then he concludes joyfully by calling upon the LORD, his God, in urgency.

Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And let those who love Your salvation say continually,
“Let God be magnified!”

But I am poor and needy;
Make haste to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay.

Let us pray like David.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

You are great and greatly to be praised. Lord, I call upon You in haste. There is much that is set against me. And yet, I know that all things work together for good to those who love You. I love You Lord. Make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer. The Spirit is for me. Christ is with me. You are great. In Jesus name, Amen.
