Psalm 75 – Thanksgiving for God’s Righteous Judgement

Published May 16, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Beloved, God is in charge. This is the song Asaph sings at Psalm 75. He begins rightly, by giving thanks.

1 We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks!
For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.

Then he captures the declarations of God. They are grace to the faithful and warning to boastful.

“When I choose the proper time,
I will judge uprightly.
The earth and all its inhabitants are dissolved;
I set up its pillars firmly. Selah

“I said to the boastful, ‘Do not deal boastfully,’
And to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up the horn.
Do not lift up your horn on high;
Do not speak with a stiff neck.’ ”

Then Asaph, knowing his God, makes declarations of his own.

But I will declare forever,
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

10 “All the horns of the wicked I will also cut off,
But the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.”

Beloved, your strength is in the God. He knows what you need. The wicked shall not prevail. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

You are great and greatly to be praised. Who are we but the lowest of Your creation. And yet, you have crowned us with glory and honour, in the name of Your Son Jesus Christ. May the Spirit, with Christ in mind, always strengthen us. May the wicked find their end in sorrow. You have exalted Your people. We praise you. In Jesus name, Amen.
