Psalm 82 – A Plea for Justice

Published July 4, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Who shall draw you from your sorrow? Who shall you call upon in your time of need? When you are not strong enough, who shall be your strength? Asaph knows. And at Psalm 82, he sings of Him.

1 God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
He judges among the gods.
How long will you judge unjustly,
And show partiality to the wicked? Selah
Defend the poor and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and needy.
Deliver the poor and needy;
Free them from the hand of the wicked.

They do not know, nor do they understand;
They walk about in darkness;
All the foundations of the earth are unstable.

I said, “You are gods,
And all of you are children of the Most High.
But you shall die like men,
And fall like one of the princes.”

Arise, O God, judge the earth;
For You shall inherit all nations.

This last Verse 8 is profound for the Christian. For the Christ has risen. By His work He has inherited all nations. He is returning to judge the earth. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. Amidst the darkness You have sent Your Light. May I ever be found basking in it. Finish Christ’s work in me, Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
