Psalm 85 – Prayer that the Lord Will Restore Favor to the Land

Published July 26, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

The sons of Korah, these temple singers sing, at Psalm 85, a prayer for restoration.

Firstly, they consider the God who is able.

1 Lord, You have been favorable to Your land;
You have brought back the captivity of Jacob.
You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people;
You have covered all their sin. Selah
You have taken away all Your wrath;
You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.

Next, they consider the God who is willing.

Restore us, O God of our salvation,
And cause Your anger toward us to cease.
Will You be angry with us forever?
Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?
Will You not revive us again,
That Your people may rejoice in You?
Show us Your mercy, Lord,
And grant us Your salvation.

Finally, they proclaim that when the Lord God calls, they will listen.

I will hear what God the Lord will speak,
For He will speak peace
To His people and to His saints;
But let them not turn back to folly.
Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him,
That glory may dwell in our land.

In the final verses of this psalm, see the Christ and your salvation!!

10 Mercy and truth have met together;
Righteousness and peace have kissed.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth,
And righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good;
And our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before Him,
And shall make His footsteps our pathway.

Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

You are the God of our Salvation. With all that is set against us, You have set the Christ for us. With all that would tempt us away, You have sent, with the Son, the Holy Spirit has our Helper. You are the God of your salvation. In Jesus name, Amen.
