Psalm 95 – A Call to Worship and Obedience

Published October 18, 2023 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

When God calls us into worship, we had better listen. Psalm 95 considers such things. At first, hear the invitation:

1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
For the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods.

To continue, hear why the invitation stands:

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep of His hand…

To conclude, hear the consequences of not responding:

7…Today, if you will hear His voice:
“Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
When your fathers tested Me;
They tried Me, though they saw My work.
10 For forty years I was grieved with that generation,
And said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts,
And they do not know My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”

This is how Psalm 95 ends. May such things never be spoken of us. In Christ, such things will never be spoken of us. Shall we not seek Him? Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Your are great and greatly to be praise. We have been called into worship. May we hear Your voice and obey the command. We call upon Christ’s work in the presence of the Holy Spirit to meet the command. You have given us what we need. Your saved people are a thankful people. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
