Psalm 116 – Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death

Published March 6, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Who do you love? The psalmist of Psalm 116 gives us his answer to this question.

1 I love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

What does such love look like? The rest of Psalm 116 declares such things.

The pains of death surrounded me,
And the pangs of Sheol laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”

I will walk before the Lord
In the land of the living.

13 I will take up the cup of salvation,
And call upon the name of the Lord.
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people.

17 I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the Lord.

18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people,
19 In the courts of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord!

Do you love the Lord? If you do, then you have good work to do also. Call upon Him. Walk before Him. Pay your vows to God. Offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Before the Lord your God and His people, do these things! In the name of Jesus Christ, thankfully proceed.

Let us pray,

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

I love You. I worship You. I adore You. Blessed be Your holy name. Your Son has died for me. In His shed blood, my sins have been washed away. In the name of the Holy Spirit, I have His good work to hold on to. Help me to hold on. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
