Psalm 118 – Praise to God for His Everlasting Mercy

Published March 20, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Psalm 118 is a psalm of thanks and mercy. It’s Verses 1 and 29 bookend the thought.

1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

29 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

If we count up from Verse 1 to Verse 8 we receive this profound truth:

It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in man.

If we count down from Verse 29 to Verse 22 we receive this profound truth:

22 The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.

Let us then put our trust in the Lord, the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:19-22). Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. You are great and greatly to be praised. I give you all my thanks. Your mercy endures forever. It is better to trust in You than to trust in myself or others. Other’s have hated You and the salvation that you give through Your Son as worked in me through the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the foundation upon which my salvation is built. And I am thankful. I give you all my thanks. Your mercy endures forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
