Psalm 128 – Blessings of Those Who Fear the LORD

Published May 7, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Psalm 127 has considered the blessings of a home and a family. For the Psalmist there, such blessings are from the LORD God. The Psalmist of Psalm 128 knows that such blessings begin with the fear of the LORD.

1 Blessed is every one who fears the Lord,
Who walks in His ways.

It is only after having understood that God’s honour, respect and reverence is deserving, that God’s blessings are more fully realized!

When you eat the labor of your hands,
You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
In the very heart of your house,
Your children like olive plants
All around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
Who fears the Lord.

This is what the Psalmist, as inspired by the Holy Spirit, wants for you, dear reader. And so, he closes this psalm with such a proclamation.

The Lord bless you out of Zion,
And may you see the good of Jerusalem
All the days of your life.
Yes, may you see your children’s children.

Peace be upon Israel!

God is good. He is to be worshiped in fullness and in truth. There is much blessing in how we fear Him. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

You are great and greatly to be praised. All blessings come from You. We live before You according to Your good will. In the Person and work of Your Son and in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, not only shall we see the next generation, not only shall we have a home on this side of glory, but eternal life and good living with You for an eternity coming. We are humbled. Keep us humbled in Christ, Amen.
