Psalm 132 – The Eternal Dwelling of God in Zion

Published May 23, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

The psalmist of Psalm 132, knowing the kind of salvation the LORD his God has given, searches, as David searched at 2 Samuel 7, for a dwelling place for the LORD.

1 Lord, remember David
And all his afflictions;
How he swore to the Lord,
And vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
“Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house,
Or go up to the comfort of my bed;
I will not give sleep to my eyes
Or slumber to my eyelids,
Until I find a place for the Lord,
A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

David’s zeal was to be commended, but the LORD God is not in need of such things. He has His dwelling place. Verse 6 speaks of Ephrathah which is Bethlehem (see prophecy here that leads us to Jesus).

Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah;
We found it in the fields of the woods.
Let us go into His tabernacle;
Let us worship at His footstool.
Arise, O Lord, to Your resting place,
You and the ark of Your strength.
Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness,
And let Your saints shout for joy.

What comes with a prophesied King is His Kingdom, a home for His people.

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it for His dwelling place:
14 “This is My resting place forever;
Here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly bless her provision;
I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation,
And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.
17 There I will make the horn of David grow;
I will prepare a lamp for My Anointed.
18 His enemies I will clothe with shame,
But upon Himself His crown shall flourish.”

Who is your King? Is Jesus? Then His kingdom belongs to you. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

Blessed be Your holy name. As I have been searching for You, You have known me and have saved me through Your Son, my King, Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit complete His work in me, that I may enter Your gates with thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
