Psalm 141 – Prayer for Safekeeping from Wickedness

Published June 11, 2024 by Rev. Pete Van't Hoff in Devotions

Dear Reader,

To whom can you cry out to, when the burden is too heavy? David has the answer, at Psalm 141.

1 Lord, I cry out to You;
Make haste to me!
Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You.
Let my prayer be set before You as incense,
The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

To the LORD we can pray for protection.

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
Keep watch over the door of my lips.
Do not incline my heart to any evil thing,
To practice wicked works
With men who work iniquity;
And do not let me eat of their delicacies.

To the LORD we can pray for protection from ourselves even.

Let the righteous strike me;
It shall be a kindness.
And let him rebuke me;
It shall be as excellent oil;
Let my head not refuse it.

To the LORD we pray against our enemies.

For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked.
Their judges are overthrown by the sides of the cliff,
And they hear my words, for they are sweet.
Our bones are scattered at the mouth of the grave,
As when one plows and breaks up the earth.

To the LORD we can pray for escape.

But my eyes are upon You, O God the Lord;
In You I take refuge;
Do not leave my soul destitute.
Keep me from the snares they have laid for me,
And from the traps of the workers of iniquity.
10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
While I escape safely.

From your sins, from the curse and from the devil, the LORD has provided escape, in the Person and work of Jesus, through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. What a great God and Father we have. Let us pray.

Dear Lord and heavenly Father,

You are great and greatly to be praised. What a great escape, You have provided in Your Son. What a great promise You are fulfilling in me through the Holy Spirit. And in all, Your glory is our pursuit. Praise be to You and to Your holy name. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
